Emily Maguire
With seven albums and five books to her name, singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, composer and poet Emily Maguire is truly ?a talent to be reckoned with? (RnR Magazine). With a remarkable, inspiring story to tell, she has been featured many times in interviews and playlists on BBC national radio, her thought-provoking lyrics, supremely expressive voice and spellbinding live performances winning her fans across the globe.
Born in London and raised near Cambridge, Emily's early life was marked by a love for books and music, mastering several instruments despite health setbacks. Diagnosed with acute clinical depression and later fibromyalgia, Emily's life changed dramatically at a young age, leading her to discover songwriting as a form of expression and healing.
Receiving a guitar at 21 was pivotal; confined by illness, Emily channeled her creativity into songwriting, producing prolifically despite ongoing health battles. Her music, often described as raw and organic, resonates deeply with themes of mental health and personal resilience. Diagnosed with bipolar disorder type I at 23, Emily continued to craft songs that reflected her experiences, eventually going public with her struggles in a candid memoir, "Start Over Again".
Moving to Australia provided a transformative period, where Emily regained her health and creativity on a goat farm. There, she honed her craft, made cheese for income and continued to write and perform music that garnered critical acclaim. Her albums, from the introspective Bird Inside A Cage to the hauntingly beautiful A Bit Of Blue, reflect her evolving sound and lyrical depth.
Beyond her music, Emily is a vocal advocate for mental health awareness, speaking openly about her journey to combat stigma. Her efforts have been recognised globally, including winning the 2019 Mogens Schou Award for her advocacy work. Despite setbacks like chronic tendonitis and severe bipolar episodes, Emily's resilience shines through, reflected in her latest album A Light To Follow.
Now based in Bath and supported by neighbour and friend Jody Prewett, Emily is performing at intimate private house concerts, village halls and other small shows in 2025.
