What's On at the Sondheim Theatre, London

The Sondheim Theatre is home to the global phenomenon Les Misérables which has been watched by over 130 million people across 53 countries in 22 languages! Part of The Delfont Mackintosh Theatre group, and its central theatre, it has a seating capacity of 1137. The theatre has held many shows, events and productions over the years.

The theatre opened in 1907 as The Queens and was built as a pair with The Gielgud on the adjoining corner of Shaftesbury Avenue. It hosted variety, plays, musicals, and comedy, and in 1940 was the first West End Theatre to be halted by bombing during the war. It didn’t reopen until 1959. 1966 saw the last of Noel Cowards West End performances, and the first of Laurance Oliviers National Theatre.

Les Misérables moved to the Queens in 2004 and in 2010 Delfont Mackintosh refurbished the theatre for the shows 25th anniversary. 2019 saw the theatre reopening after major refurbishment under the new name Sondheim Theatre in celebration of Stephen Sondheim’s 90th birthday. The Sondheim is a participating theatre in the Q-Park Theatreland parking scheme where you can get 50% off car parking after midday for 4 hours.

There is also an NCP on Lexington Street nearby.

Bus - Numbers 14, 19, 38 will get you to the closest bus stops.

The Sondheim has a seating capacity of 1137.

If you would like to buy a ticket in person from the Sondheim Theatre Box Office, they are open from 2 hours 30 minutes before the start of the show, and until 15 minutes after curtain up.  The box office remains open between shows on matinee days.

The Sondheim Theatre is the central box office for all 8 Delfont Mackintosh Theatre's where you can purchase tickets for other shows, open Monday - Friday noon - 6pm.

No.  Delfont Mackintosh Theatres, including the Sondheim, do not permit food or drink purchased elsewhere to be taken into their theatres.

All of their theatre bars serve drinks and snacks (no hot food).

Latecomers will only be admitted at a suitable break in the performance.
