WHAT'S ON AT THE GILLIAN LYNNE THEATRE, LONDON
What's On at the Gillian Lynne Theatre, London
The Gillian Lynne Theatre is part of LW Theatre and has a seating capacity of 1294. Opening in 1847 as The Mogul Saloon, it has been known as a tavern, a meeting place for glee clubs, a music hall, home of variety shows, and in 1921, a new era of musicals began with a trio of Jerome Kern shows (Sally, Cabaret Girl, and The Beauty Prize) being performed.
The theatre attracted stars such as Fred Astaire, Sophie Tucker, and Gracie Fields before branching out into plays by George Bernard Shaw, Agatha Christie, and Eugene O’Neill. As a new reign of musicals took hold, including Grease starring Richard Gere, variety shows such as Bruce Forsyth’s were also popular. It was equally a television studio, broadcasting ‘This Is Your Life.’
In 1981, the theatre premiered Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cats, making use of the now infamous revolving stage. Gillian Lynne was choreographer and the theatre made history by being the first West End theatre to be named after a female. It officially joined LW Theatres in 2000.
