Mez & the Fezzes ? so here we are in The Ancestral Seat of Madness, The Dublin Castle, natch, and our headline entertainment for this evening is a kind of off-shoot of said Gar?ons Nutty? Mark Bedders Bedford often plays bass in the Fezzes; and Mez their good self sometimes plays in Madness. Suggs sometimes sings. Mez & the Fezzes is an all-star band also featuring members of the Van Morrison Band and the Jools Holland Rhythm & Blues Orchestra. Between them they have worked with BB King, Paul McCartney, Tom Jones, Robert Plant, Joss Stone and many many more. Led by drummer/lead singer Mez Clough, the Fezzes play an infectious mix of rhythm & blues, rock ?n? roll, surf and swing. They keep the dance floor rocking with classic tunes from the likes of Chuck Berry, Fats Domino as well as cult movie themes from Quentin Tarantino. The Groovy Arts Club Band ? DC residential beatniks supreme GACB neatly combine Yardbirds like rave up rocking with a nigh on garage Happy Mondays vibe?Bohemian groovers as they are. Always a goodly frug along experience with these vintage vibes merchants. Talking of vibes?isn?t that former Vibrators dynamo Eddie Edwards on drums. Sure is. Chris Lewington ? not to be confused with the Charlton Athletic goalie?this Chris L is a purveyor of intelligent, crafted songwriting steeped in ?60s/?70s style and sass, as evinced by his recent ?Girl On A Train? single. Great stuff, that could well please admirers of Richard Hawley or Nick Lowe. Mel & Marcel ? the Lee and Nancy of the London suburbs perhaps, and something of the recently late and definitely lamented Marianne Faithful about Mel too. Twangsome and artful songcraft.
